愛媛県大三島生まれ。大阪府三島郡（現在の高槻市）に移る。「三島」は大三島と三島郡に由来する。中国・明末の書家、王鐸の草書連綿体を研究し、格調高い独自の書風を確立した。1993年文化功労者。1998年文化勲章。

Born in Omishima, Ehime Prefecture, and later moved to Mishima District (now Takatsuki City), Osaka Prefecture. The name "Santo" is derived from Omishima (located in Imabari city, Ehime Prefecture ) and Mishima (located in Takatsuki city, Osaka Prefecture ). He studied the cursive script style of Wang Duo, a Chinese calligrapher of the late Ming Dynasty, establishing a highly dignified and unique style of calligraphy. He was recognized as a Person of Cultural Merit in 1993 and received the Order of Culture in 1998.
